Things I know about corn snakes

Postby leesmith on Thu Feb 28, 2008 8:18 pm

Okay this is the things I know about a corn snake. Can anyone see if the website I got it from is wrong or if i have missed any thing!

Common Name: Corn Snake, Red Rat Snake
Size: Hatchling corn snakes range in size from 9 - 14 inches in length. Adult corn snakes reach anywhere from 3 to 5 feet. Males grow bigger than females. Some corns can grow up to 6-7 foot.
Life span: 12 - 15 years.

Housing requirements:
Enclosure: Baby:12”x6”x5”
6 months – 1year:16”x24”x 5”
Adults:3’ x 1’ x 1’

Temperature: Day:78°F-82°F =25°C-28°C
Night:65°F-70°F = 19°C-21°C
Basking spot:85°F-90°F = 29°C-32°C

Winter: Sub-adults and adults corn snakes might have a stroke or period of time were they will refuse food. If the refuse 2 or 3 amounts of food in the row, you will have to reduce the temperatures to 60°F

Heat/Light: Corn snakes require a supplemental hot spot to digest food and remain active. They should be provided with heat mat 1/3 of the tank. Hot rocks are not recommended in case of burns. If it does get too hot a thermostat will control the temperature.

Substrate: Newspaper, butcher paper, paper towel, indoor/outdoor carpeting and wood shavings. Avoid any cedar based wood shavings.

Environment
: corn snakes should be provided with a warm, dry enclosure and should always have clean, fresh water provided in an easily accessible bowl. They will get stressed if there is no shelter.

Diet: Corn snakes should be feed mice and rats. Baby corn snakes should be feed pinkies or fuzzies. A good rule of thumb for feeding all captive snakes is that the food item should not be larger than 1 and times the girth of the snake at its thickest point.
Adults: 2-3 large mice or small rats per week
Baby: 1 Pinkie per week

Maintenance: Enclosures should be spot checked for fecal matter daily. It is recommended that carpet substrates be removed and washed at least weekly. Paper substrates should also be changed weekly. If conscientiously spot cleaned, wood based substrates can be replaced every 2 to 3 weeks. Water bowls should be cleaned and replaced at least weekly and any uneaten dead food should be removed after 2 - 3 hours.

Thanks alot
